The Arts

Drama

The main dramatic production in the high school occurs in the fall. In recent years we've performed West Side Story, Arsenic and Old Lace, Sense and Sensibility and Cyrano de Bergerac. This fall’s production was the musical Pippin, bringing such memorable characters as Charlemagne, Berthe and the Leading Player to life along with ‘70’s style pop song and dance. The show was entertaining for the audience and excellent training for young actors. Our drama director, Mr. Warren, is a “method” veteran with Stanislavski training and off-Broadway experience.

ART

Two art courses are offered in the High School: Advanced Placement/Honors Art and General Art/Special Topics. The emphasis of all art classes is the encouragement of personal expression and self-discovery. The classes provide support and encouragement to that end.

AP/Honors is a rigorous course that follows the guidelines set out by the AP Board. It is for highly committed students. All of the students submit a portfolio at the end of the year. AP students send the portfolio out for assessment by the AP examiners.

The General Art/Special Topics class is a broad overview of the principles of art and design, both two and three dimensional. A range of techniques, media, and expressive approaches are investigated. Each semester is organized around a specific topic which may include historic, philosophic and ethical investigation and debate so students may take this course more than once.

Middle School classes briefly touch a variety of media and techniques during the quarter. For coherency, the curriculum is organized around a particular topic.

Vocal Music

In early chorus classes, students learn the basics of reading music and vocal production. A larger group meets several days per week at 7:00am and prepares music for a Fall Concert, Winter Concert and Spring Concert. Qualified musicians may also be selected for the SAISA Music Festival, which will be in Dhaka next year (January 2005). For the festival, students prepare a solo, several ensembles and the full chorus selections.

Instrumental Music
There are two "bands" at the secondary level; Wind Ensemble is small and requires an audition, containing the more experienced players. Their repertoire emphasizes chamber music of the Classic era. The Intermediate Band is open to anyone with approximately one year's playing experience and performs a standard school band program. Both groups rehearse in the 7:00am slot. For the most part, students begin instruments as part of Middle School Music classes and join the Intermediate Band when ready. As with choir, qualified players may attend the SAISA Festival.
