Explore Nepal

Nepal has a rich environment for real life, hands-on learning experiences. Explore Nepal is designed to engage students actively in learning more about their host country, and through these experiences broaden their understanding of cultural, social and environmental concepts. We also expect that this program will provide our students with the opportunity to practice cultural understanding.

Students are required to meet some of the following objectives each year:

Be involved in their host country, Nepal through interaction with the people and the community.
Be engaged in activities which lead to deeper understanding of the environment.
Participate in community service based activities.
Engage in challenging physical activities.
Develop leadership skills and skills in working collaboratively in a group.

Explore Nepal is a week-long program for students in grades 5-12.

Each grade level has a different experience. These are the activities carried out in 2005-2006:

Grade 5: Village stay in Machhegaon.
Grade 6: In-depth exploration of selected local crafts of the Kathmandu valley.
Grade 7: Exploring pollution issues in the Kathmandu Valley.
Grade 8: Trekking within the Kathmandu Valley to explore its various cultures.
Grade 9: Construction of biogas plants as an alternative source of energy.
Grade10: Managing the challanges confronting Patan as a world heritage site.
Grade11: Mountain biking along the rim of the Valley for personal challenge.
Grade12: Team building and leadership skills through challenging physical activities

Expectations
All students are expected to participate fully in Explore Nepal and demonstrate some aspect of their learning from the experience. High school students will receive one-quarter credit each year and a passing grade will be required for graduation.

Students who have to miss Explore Nepal due to illness or other reasons will have the opportunity to make up for the lost credits with a local community service project.

Parent Orientation
Please plan to attend the Parent Orientation Night for Explore Nepal. We will announce the date and time when appropriate. Faculty advisors and agency representatives will be available to answer your questions and concerns for each of the different grade level activities.
