United Nations Day
History
"Every
year we celebrate, nations large and small, another year of world
peace in our global halls". Lincoln School has been celebrating
United Nations Day since 1988. Students, teachers, administrators,
parents and friends of Lincoln School gather together, wearing
their national dress or the colors of their flag, in order to
celebrate the birthday of the United Nations (October 24th, 1945)
as well as the cultural and ethnic diversity of Lincoln School.
It is at this time that we also salute our host country, Nepal.
The fourth grade students, who started this tradition many years
ago, are the main flag carriers in the Opening Ceremony. Every
nation represented at Lincoln is included in the flag parade.
A representative from one of our local UN organizations gives
a keynote speech. The members of the Student Council and National
Honor Society lead us in a ceremony entitled "Circle of Peace".
UN panel discussions follow. The festivities continue with an
International Luncheon given by the parents of Lincoln School.
A
Note From the Director
UN Day is a time to not only honor an important institution but
also to recognize and celebrate our own diversity. Thirty-eight
different nationalities are represented at Lincoln, giving us
a unique opportunity to live our belief in tolerance and compassion
and our commitment to cross-cultural understanding and preparing
our students to be citizens of the world. It is an impressive
day which I hope you will all be able to share with us in some
way.
