The Grade 1 class forms a strong classroom community where students are encouraged to take risks and express themselves in a fun and structured environment. First graders become more independent throughout the year, learning to ask and answer questions and participate in respectful discussions. To prepare for a life of literacy, students build good reading habits, apply knowledge about the way words work, and write across a variety of genres. In Grade 1, students work to solve problems and explain their thinking individually and with a group, particularly in math and science.
